Northern Lights and Greatland Conference football games in week six of the regular season featured the Soldotna Stars and the Nikiski Bulldogs, with the Kenai Kardinals drawing a bye for the weekend.
Soldotna 51 -Homer 6
The Soldotna Stars dominated the Homer Mariners 51-6 on the road in NLC football action Saturday to improve to 2-0 in the NLC and to guarantee SoHi a playoff spot in the Medium School division.
The Stars scored six touchdowns in the game’s first quarter, including two defensive touchdowns. Along with three rushing touchdowns by Drew Gibbs and a TD pass from Brooks Furlong to Tim Duke; the Stars scored on a blocked punt, which was caught by Duke in the end zone for a touchdown and a fumble recovered in the end zone by Drew Gibbs for a touchdown. SoHi lead 41-0 in the first quarter.
The Stars added a 27-yard field goal by Bailey Jones for a 44-0 halftime lead. One two-yard touchdown for SoHi’s Jace Urban closed the Stars scoring. Homer scored a touchdown on the final play from scrimmage for the game on a 68-yard pass play; that was the first touchdown allowed by the Stars in nearly 19 quarters.
SoHi stands at 5-0 on the season; 2-0 in the NLC, clinching a playoff spot with two weeks remaining in the regular season.
Nikiski 45 – Voznesenka 0
The Nikiski Bulldogs hosted a third-straight home contest with a Saturday pairing against Greatland Conference opponent Voznesenka, downing the Cougars 45-0.
The Bulldogs recorded their second-straight shutout of a Greatland Conference opponent. Nikiski amassed nearly 500 yards, balanced between 264 passing yards and 221 rushing yards. Luke Johnson scored two defensive touchdowns returning a fumble and an interception for touchdowns. Quarterback Cade Anderson passed for three touchdowns.
Nikiski improved to 3-1 in the Greatland Conference and will face Barrow at Nikiski on Friday, September 27th for a spot in the GLC playoffs.
