Conference Pairing Fill Week Five Football Schedule

High school football’s week five of the regular season features a pairing of two, 100+ wins coaches; a NLC showdown on the “Rock”; and a perennial power facing a relative newcomer in the Peninsula Conference.

 

SoHI vs Palmer @ Palmer  Friday Night  7:00 p.m.   ESPN 1140AM and www.radiokenai.com

The Soldotna Stars, owners of the nation’s second, longest winning streak at 53 games, will face off against the Palmer Moose in the Northern Lights Conference opener for both teams on Friday night at Palmer High School.  The game is set under the lights with a 7:00 p.m. start time.

 

The underlying story is Palmer head coach Rod Christiansen going for his 150th coaching victory with the Moose matching wits with SoHi head coach Galen Brantley, owner of 101 victories in under 11 full seasons at SoHi.  Christiansen (who both played for Palmer and has served as Palmer coach for 27 seasons) will tie coaching legend Buck Nystrum for the state coaching record at 150 games.

 

The main story on Friday will be SoHi’s devastating defense and multi-faceted offense opening NLC play against the 1-3 Moose.  The Stars will play their first Division II opponent of the 2017 season having notched a 4-0 record and amassing over 1,700 yards and 157 points through four non-divisional contests.  SoHi quarterback Brandon Crowder has passed for seven touchdowns and rushed for two TD’s; fullback Brenner Furlong has rushed for seven touchdowns for the Stars.

Kenai vs Kodiak @ Kodiak   Friday Night  6:00 p.m.    KSRM 920AM and www.radiokenai.com

The Kenai Kardinals look to advance to 2-0 in the Northern Lights Conference traveling to Kodiak for a Friday night conference pairing against the Bears.  Kenai, 3-1 on the season, features a rushing attack which has amassed nearly 850 yards (in three games) and a deep threat in Zack Tuttle, who is averaging 27 yards per catch.

Niksiki vs Joe Redington High  Saturday  2:00 p.m.   ESPN 1140AM and www.radiokenai.com

The Nikisk Bulldogs, 1-0 in the Peninsula Conference, host Joe Redington High School on Saturday at 2:00 p.m.  The Bulldogs ground game has been their staple, rushing for over 400 yards against Voznesenka and rushing for 600 yards in three contests.  Redington also stands at 1-0 in the Peninsula Conference, 3-1 overall, and in its third football season for the new Knik area school, the Huskies have developed into an early contender for one of two playoff spots for the post season.

Ian Johnson leads the Bulldog offense with nearly 400 rushing yards and five touchdowns in three games.
