Conference Volleyball Tournaments Enter Saturday Rounds

Conference volleyball tournaments in the Southcentral Conference and the Northern Lights Conference continue play on Saturday with conference championships and state berths on the line.

Nikiski Bulldogs @ SCC Tournament in Homer

The SCC #1 seed Nikiski Bulldogs needed only one tournament victory to earn a berth to the 3A state volleyball tournament because the 12-0 Bulldogs took care of business during an unbeaten, conference regular season.

Nikiski again handled its business on Friday night at Homer High School, caging the Anchorage Christian School Lions in three games to advance to the South Central Conference championship game scheduled for 4 p.m. Saturday against the Grace Christian Grizzlies. Grtace advances to the title game with a three-game sweep of Hiomer.

SoHi and Kenai @ Northern Lights Conference Tournament in Kodiak

The Soldotna Stars earn a trip to next week’s 4A state volleyball championships on the strength of a pair of Friday victories in the double-back round at the Northern Lights Conference volleyball tournament in Kodiak.  And, the Stars work is not done.

SoHi, following a loss on Thursday night to Wasilla, opened their Friday run with a narrow five-set victory over the Kodiak Bears on the Bears home floor.  SoHi  downed the Bears 25-22, 25-19, 21-25, 23-25 and 15-9.

Advancing to the state qualifying contest Friday, the Stars played their best with a four-set win over Palmer, 20-25, 25-15, 25-17 and 25-18, rallying from an opening game loss.

The Stars continue play on Saturday with a 10 a.m. contest against Wasilla with the winner advancing to the NLC championship game Saturday afternoon.

Plenty of work still to do, and an NLC title still in reach of the Stars.

The Kenai Kardinals were eliminated with a second loss at the NLC tournament, falling 3-1 to Palmer.

The top three teams from the NLC volleyball tournament advance to the ASAA 4A State Volleyball Championships scheduled for Thursday through Saturday, November 9-11 at West Anchorage High School.
