Conference Wrestling Tournaments Crown A Combined Six Individual Champions From Central Peninsula

The Northern Lights Conference and Kachemak Conference wrestling tournaments crowned weight-class champions, team champions and determined state qualifiers.  The Division II Kachemak Conference tournament was held at Nikiski High School with Nikiski, Kenai and Homer; the Division I Northern Lights Conference tournament was held at Wasilla High School with the SoHi Stars representing the Kenai Peninsula.

 

Northern Lights Conference: Division I

The Soldotna Stars wrestling program claimed four individual championships and placed third in the overall team scoring to champion Colony and runner-up Palmer.

Ezekiel Miller topped the field in the 130-pound division; Issac Chavarria placed first at 140 pounds; Sean Babitt at 189 and Liam Babitt at 215, each earned weight class championships.

State Qualifiers: Top Five in weight class

In addition to the individual champions, SoHi state qualifiers include: Hunter Secor in second at 119, Hunter Richardson in second at 171, Logan Katzenberger in second at 285, Wayne Mellon in third at 160, Cassius Miller in fourth at 135, Saiyan Baker in fourth at 152, Dennis Taylor in fourth at 160, Noah Land in fourth at 285, Golden Musgrave in fifth at 125, Grayden Musgrave in fifth at 130, Collin Peck in fifth at 145 and Edgar Land in fifth at 152.

NLC Girls 

Trinity Donovan, wrestling at 145 pounds won the championship round by pin and qualifies to the ASAA Girls Wrestling Championships.

 

Kachemak Conference: Division II

The Kenai Kardinals, Nikiski Bulldogs and Homer Mariners competed at the Kachemak Conference wrestling tournament at Nikiski High School.

Kenai’s Tucker Vann won the only individual title for Kenai or Nikiski with a championship at 189 pounds.

Runner-up finishes for the Kardinals included:  Owen Hart at 112, Talon Whicker at 125, Owen Whicker at 130 and Andrew Gaethle at 145.

Runner-up finishes for the Bulldogs included: Caileb Payne at 189, Tim Goodnight at 215 and Mayaac Schmit at 285

The top three finishers in each weight class plus at-large selections (determined by ASAA) qualify to the 1-2-3A Division II state wrestling tournament.

 

The ASAA State Wrestling Championships are scheduled for Friday and Saturday, May 21-22 with the Division I tournament at Bartlett High School and the Division II and Girls Division at Chugiak High School.
