The apparent seizure of Ukraine’s Crimean Peninsula by Russia has sparked talks from Washington about possible U.S. sanctions.

We spoke to Alaskan Congressman Don Young about his thoughts on the current instability between Russia and Ukraine and the possibility of U.S. sanctions.

Rep. Young: “The sanction concept is real, and I think that will work because Russia just went to the Olympics and they were trying to make a good impression on the world and they did a fair job and they don’t want to totally destroy it by the activity in the Ukraine so I think you’re going to see some of his troops pulled out or no new troops added, I’m talking about Putin.”

Congressman Young stated his opinion that America should not consider military force in this situation because its unneeded.

Rep. Young: “The area that’s so called occupied or interfered with is Russian, and that’s the thing they’re more interested in and the justification that Putin says they are Russian and they’re under threat from the pro-western Ukrainians so that’s the challenge we’re going to have to face and live up to. I again keep saying we can’t keep using military strength every time there’s some kind of upheaval in the world.”

Conversations between the U.S. and Russian foreign minister Sergei Lavrov ended without agreements earlier today.
