Connections Home School Student Wins Caring For The Kenai 2020

Anna DeVolld, a 15 year-old Connections home schooler from Soldotna, took first place, and a $1,600 cash award, in the 2020 Caring for the Kenai environmental and natural disaster preparedness contest.

 

This was the 30th annual Caring for the Kenai, an environmental contest that challenges high school students to answer the question: “What can I do, invent, create, or improve to better care for the environment on the Kenai Peninsula, or better prepare for a natural disaster?”

 

DeVolld won the $1,600 top prize with her work on the Promote Our Pollinators program. Her winning project is an environmental program designed to educate the community about the importance of pollinators and why their numbers are declining.

 

She offered details about what her project entailed: “I carried out my original idea, which was to plant 150 pollinator packs and distribute them to local businesses and individuals around our community. I developed curriculum kits that contain everything a teacher needs to hold a pollinator lesson in their classroom. I distributed 15 of those last Spring. I’ve also worked with the City of Soldotna and the City of Kenai to install permanent pollinator garden signs in pollinator-friendly spaces around our community. I’ve also created an online class to provide to teachers to use a part of their distance-learning program.”

Taking second place and earning $1,100 was the team of Lindy Guernsey and Akilena Veach from Seward High School. They demonstrated a working drone which they had built at school, using 3-D printers. It supplied the Seward Flood Board with visual data to help prevent property damage during flooding events.

 

On Wednesday, August 19 the finalists and participating teachers will receive their awards at a joint Kenai/Soldotna Chamber Commerce meeting, open to the public, at the Kenai Visitors and Cultural Center.

 

The top 12 were selected on March 5. Among the finalists were students from schools across the Borough, including: Cook Inlet Academy, Kenai Central High, Homer High, Nikiski High, Seward High, Soldotna High, and Connections Home School.

 

In addition to the $8,000 in cash awards for the finalists, $20,000 will be distributed across each winning school’s science departments.
