The IRS is warning taxpayers that more criminals than ever are attempting to get private consumer information via texts and emails that appear to originate from the government agency.

The IRS says so far this tax season, it has seen a 400 percent surge in those phony emails that try to get consumers to click on links or attachments.
Often those links lead to phony documents or websites that to appear to be official — either from the IRS or tax software companies — trying to get consumers to send in personal sensitive information.
The IRS wants everyone to know it does not ask for that type of information via email or text.
