The Alaska Division of Insurance approved a nearly 40 percent increase in average rates for the two companies that provide Obamacare.

Division Director Lori Wing-Heier says Premera Blue Cross Blue Shield and Moda Health requested the rate increases, citing the high cost of medical services as one factor for the request.

The average rate increase approved for Premera was 38.7% and Moda was granted a 39.6% increase.

Those increases apply to individual plans on and off the online marketplace.

Wing-Heier said the cost of health care in Alaska has been a long-standing concern with no clear way to addressing it.
