A COVID-19 consent agenda resolution on tonight’s Kenai Peninsula Borough Assembly would declare the Kenai Peninsula Borough an inclusive community where citizens are treated equally and empowered with free choice.

Assemblyman Jesse Bjorkman elaborated on what the resolution says:

This is Resolution 2021-067. The upshot of this resolution is the Assembly and Mayor going on record against vaccine segregation and vaccine mandates by our Borough Government. There’s quite a bit of concern about vaccine governmental mandates or any kind of segregation vaccine passports that might be implemented. This resolution is the Borough Assembly and Mayor going on record against governmental mandates of vaccines and vaccine passports. The mayor brought this forward and asked myself and two other assemblymen to join him in this effort in sponsoring this resolution and I’m proud to, and thankful, to do that. It’s very needful, although, the borough does not have health powers. The Borough, as it sits right now, could not institute any kind of vaccine mandate or vaccine passport. This just puts us on record as saying that we definitely oppose those mandates.”

The Assembly said that all citizens should have the right to choose to not get a COVID-19 vaccination based on religious, medical, or personal reasons. They say that proof of vaccination status shouldn’t be required by any government mandate in order to access businesses, places of worship, or cultural events. The Assembly also states that they have no legal authority to waive mandates imposed by the State of Alaska or the Kenai Peninsula Borough School District.

Additionally, the resolution emphasizes the idea that empowering free choice includes not disparaging fellow citizens for their personal choice to get a COVID-19 vaccination or their choice to wear face coverings.

The resolution, if passed, would declare the Kenai Peninsula Borough an inclusive community, where all residents are treated equally and free from discrimination regarding individual health decisions.
