The Central Peninsula Hospital hosted its annual adult drive-through flu shot clinic on Wednesday, where local nursing students administered the doses.

Infection Preventionist Dana McDonald says the hospital hopes to bring down the amount of flu on the Kenai Peninsula.

McDonald: “Really the flu season starts October 1st so we’re getting a lot of people vaccinated as soon as we can.”

The shots were administered by Kenai Peninsula College nursing students who spoke about the experience and what made them want to be a nurse.

“This is good experience, and they have a series of checklists that you have to perform, skills that you have to have before you can actually give a vaccination.”

“I did combat medicine in the military, so five years in the Marine Corp.”

“It is exciting.”

As we previously reported, the CDC found that last year’s 2014-2015 flu vaccines did not match the components for influenza A well across the nation. Alaska mimicked the national trend which saw an early peak in flu A and a later flu B increase.

The State of Alaska still recommends residents get flu vaccines each year when they become available in the fall.
