The Alaska Interagency Coordination Center reports that a caller noticed smoke was seen from a fire that was reported around mile 54 on the northside of the Sterling Highway on Sunday, which is located near the Russian River Campground. Alaska State Troopers were also called with reports of smoke in the same area.
Air support was provided by the Alaska Division of Forestry along with hand crews from the Forestry service. Water support was provided by Cooper Landing Emergency Services.
Crews arrived on the scene to discover that a 1/3-acre fire burning in a man-made fuel break. Cooper Landing Volunteer Fire Department and Chugach resources responded to the scene. Air support deployed their bucket and did a fuel cycle before being released.
The fire was turned over to Chugach IC and dispatch. Forestry hand crews were on scene last evening completing mop-up.
