CTE Programs Designed To Prepare Students For Post-Secondary Options

Annaleah Karron, the KPBSD College & Career Readiness Coordinator presented on the Career and Technical Education Programs to the Kenai Peninsula Borough Assembly at the recent general meeting.

 

The KPBSD CTE programs help our students around the district gain valuable workforce experience while potentially earning college credit.

 

Karron discussed the goal of the district’s CTE programs.

“The goal of the CTE programs is really to inspire students and specifically to build skills.  We want students leaving the Kenai Peninsula Shcool District ready to go into a career or to go to college to find a career pathway that they are interested in.  And hopefully come right back here to the Kenai Peninsula to be able to join our workforce and fill some of those gaps that we see across the country.”

 

Currently, there is a push for architecture and construction programs; however, the cost of operating these courses is increasing.  In addition transportation, purchasing new equipment and a lack of materials is a roadblock in some areas of study.

 

Karron explains the needs for consistent transportation and adequate equipment.

“Getting kids to those facilitates for some of those hands-on classes is definitely a struggle.  So being able to create either a bussing system or having a van that picks kids up to get them to those shop classes would be phenomenal.  As well as materials and resources, I would love to be able to buy wielders and oxygen and acetylene kits for all of our shops.  Higher price cost than textbooks do; but the textbooks are needed also.  When we look long-term planning those industry certifications are building those courses so that there’s opportunity for all of the different pathways.”

 

Partnering with these programs that contribute to their success are local organizations such as KPC, AVTEC, EMT and others.

 

Currently, these programs are being funded by Carl Perkins Funding which provides $300,000 which helps service around 8,000 young adults district-wide.

 

Despite the roadblocks, these programs have proven to be successful. Career and Technical Education Programs are helping young adults prepare for the workforce, especially in Alaska.
