Cym Smith Outraces The Field For The 2017 Tustumena 200 Championship

Posting the fastest running times through the final half of the 2017 Tustumena 200, three-time champion Cym Smith outraced the field for the T-200 championship.

Cym Smith crosses the finish line in Kasilof on Sunday to win the 30th Anniversary T-200 in a total elapsed time of 26 hours and three minutes.

Smith, starting in the 14th pole position, maneuvered through the field posting the second-fastest running time through the Freddie’s Roadhouse checkpoint (mile 43) and into the McNeil Canyon School, halfway checkpoint.  Nicolas Petit, runner-up to Smith, posted the fasted running time through the first two checkpoints, running out front from the #1 start position.

Smith battled Petit throughout the day on Sunday, from McNeil Canyon School to the finish line in Kasilof.  Smith posted the fastest third leg with a time of 4:16, five minutes in-front-of Petit.

 

Down the stretch, Cym Smith completed the final 43-mile leg in 3:29 crossing the finish line with a cumulative run time of 16 hours and three minutes.  Nicolas Petit, second to the finish line, recorded a total run time of 16 hours and six minutes.  Only three minutes separated Smith and Petit in the 2017 Tustumena 200.  Smith registers his fourth T-200 victory.

Dave Turner passed Mitch Seavey on the final stretch from Freddie’s Roadhouse to finish third overall.
