Daylight Savings To Begin Sunday, Tradition to End?

We will be turning our clocks forward one hour this Sunday at 2am, despite moves in the State Senate to end Daylight Saving Time.

Under Senator Anna MacKinnon’s bill, Alaska would end the annual time change and may transition to Pacific time.

Sen. MacKinnon(R-Eagle River): ” We reached out to the business community specifically, because we were concerned that there might be adverse effects to their business operations. Overwhelmingly, 78% [were in favor]. The additionally piece of data that I’ll offer you today is that every single region in the state voted to eliminate Daylight Saving Time. Again, this is not a statistical survey, but Alaskans are passionate about the issue.”

Most of Alaska is currently on the same time zone, except for the western Aleutians, which are in the same time zone as Hawaii, one hour behind Alaska.

If the bill is approved, Alaska would end Daylight Saving Time in 2017.
