The Kenai Peninsula Borough is offering tax exemptions for permanent residents of the Kenai Peninsula Borough who own and occupy their own home. Any applicants for tax exemptions must have owned the property prior to January 1 and occupy it as their primary residence.
These exemptions can reduce the amount of property taxes owed each year. Applications for residential, disabled resident, and volunteer firefighter / EMS exemptions must be postmarked or delivered to the borough no later than 5:00 p.m. on Friday, January 15.
Adeena Wilcox, Assessing Director for the Kenai Peninsula Borough, told KSRM that there are many opportunities for exemptions, detailing only a handful here: “The deadline is January 15. The Mayor has extended that through the end of March, so through the March 31, there is an additional form that they would have to fill-out – it’s called the ‘late waiver form.’ We have those here in our office, and I believe they’re also on our website. That would cover the homeowner’s exemption, which is locally called the 50K, and the $10,000 volunteer firefighter / EMS provider’s exemption…”
The Senior Citizen exemption is for residents age 65 or older prior to January 1. Those applications, as well as applications for disabled veteran exemptions, have a postmark or delivery deadline of March 31.
