The deadline to register to vote or update your registration for the August 16 Primary and Special General Election is on Sunday July 17.
The Alaska Division of Elections says that registration can be done a number of ways, including online, through paper form, or an in-person registration. To register online, all you need is a current Alaska driver’s license or state ID. For paper registration, print a form to complete and sign. Then, send your completed form by mail, fax or email attachment to a regional elections office. To register in person, visit a Division of Elections office or a voter registration agency in your area. Once your form is processed, a voter registration card will be mailed to you. This could take up to four weeks to arrive. Additionally, you can check your voter registration status through the Alaska Division of Elections.
Voters who wish to participate in the August 16 Primary and Special General Elections need to apply for an absentee ballot using your valid Alaska driver’s license or state ID card to match the information on your DMV record. Early and absentee voting options include through means of electronic transmission (vote by fax or by online delivery), or special needs voting if you are unable to vote due to age, serious illness or disability.
Before you go out to vote on August 16, be sure familiarize yourself with where your polling place is located. There also is a list of absentee in-person locations published online as well.
The Division of Elections also wants Alaskans to take a look at the 2022 Regular Primary and Special General Election sample ballots. Ballot rotation works as each house district gets its own ballot. Candidates for state representative are listed in a random alphabetical order determined by the division. Candidates for state senate are listed in the same random alphabetical order in odd house districts, and they rotate in even house districts, so that the candidate at the top of the list drops to the bottom of the list. All other candidates begin in alphabetical order in House District 1 and rotate from there.
The Northern Kenai Peninsula’s House District is 8. The Kenai/Soldotna area’s House District is 7. The South Kenai Peninsula House District is 6 with the Eastern Kenai Peninsula being House District 5. On the far south end of the Kenai Peninsula, the communities of Port Graham and Nanwalek are listed under House District 37, which coincides with the other side of the Kenai Peninsula across the Cook Inlet.
The Primary Election/Special General Election Day is Tuesday, August 16. The ballots are scheduled to be certified by August 18 with the target date to certify the Primary Election being September 2.
