A decision on ways to move forward with Alaska’s Marine Highway System is expected this month which could impact numerous Kenai Peninsula communities.

Rep. Kito (D-Juneau): “We’re expecting to see a report on management or leadership for the Marine Highway System. Then the next phase of that project once November comes and goes, will be to look at a strategic plan effort for the Marine Highway, what do we want the Marine Highway to look at in five or ten years? And then how do we make sure we have the way to generate revenue and the way to operate a system to get to that point.”
As the state has battled budget deficits since the decline of oil prices, the high-cost of the Alaska Marine Highway has come under investigation, with many saying the system is in dire need of an overhaul.
Kenai Peninsula communities like Homer, Seldovia, and Whittier have relied on the ferry system for regular transportation as well as another delivery option for tourists.
Governor Bill Walker signed an agreement in May to work with the Southeast Conference, the group which was instrumental in beginning the state’s ferry service.
