Governor Mike Dunleavy’s Executive Order 121 takes effect, and the Department of Health and Social Services reorganizes into the Department of Health (DOH) and the Department of Family and Community Services (DFCS). Gov. Dunleavy has recently named DHSS Commissioner Adam Crum as the commissioner for the Department of Health and Kim Kovol as the acting commissioner for the Department of Family and Community Services.
DHSS Commissioner Adam Crum:
“We’ve been planning and preparing for this historic day both internally and in meetings with stakeholders for many months. The work of creating two smaller, more nimble departments will continue for months to come, but we’re excited to be at this point in the process and for the path ahead.”
Both departments will continue to serve Alaskans as they have previously, but each department will have a different focus area and mission.
The DOH aims to promote the health, well-being, and self-sufficiency of Alaskans. The DOH aligns divisions that focuses on payments, processes, and programs. It will facilitate future innovations within Medicaid and public health and improving health outcomes. DOH oversight includes program eligibility, public health, and the Medicaid program.
The DFCS aims to provide support, safety, and personal well-being for vulnerable Alaskans. The department will oversee and improve the child welfare system and 24/7 facilities providing services to Alaskans.
