A Disaster Assistance Center will open in Sterling next week to help residents displaced by the Card Street Fire.
The Alaska Division of Homeland Security and Emergency Management is opening the center to help residents complete applications for the Individual Assistance programs implemented by the state last week.
Jeremy Zidek with the division said there are two programs…
Zidek: “The individual and family grant program can provide funding for people who lost their primary residence, their primary means of transportation, if they have any medical/dental/funeral expenses that were a direct result of the disaster. It can also pay for personal items that may have been destroyed if those are essential items. There’s also a temporary housing program.”
The center will open on Tuesday, July 7, through Wednesday, July 8 from 10:00 am to 7:00 pm at the Sterling Elementary School.
The division also recommends that anyone affected take photos of damage before cleaning up and keeping receipts.
Applicants will need to provide the following when applying for individual assistance:
- Description of damages and/or losses
- Home ownership documentation
- Insurance information
- Personal identification
- Proof of occupancy (utility bill)
Applicants who wish to apply for state assistance telephonically can call the IA hotline at 1-855-445-7131. The deadline to apply for IA for those impacted by the Kenai wildfires is August 18.
