The Marijuana Control Board is working on regulations for on-site consumption. Alaska is the first state that’s legalized marijuana to allow on-site consumption.

Board member Loren Jones of Juneau spoke about discussions on the topic at their most recent meeting.

Jones: “We had the version from staff and the Attorney General’s office, a version by our chair, and a version by one of our members, and we sort of picked and choosed [sic] some, we made some slight changes here and there and then basically we voted unanimously to have those regulations to go through the process of the Department of Law to be put out for public hearing.”

If adopted, the regulations will allow for cannabis retailers to apply for an on-site consumption endorsement.

The board also discussed requiring store-owners to provide an area cordoned from the rest of the purchasing space via a secured door for customers who choose to consume marijuana products on-site.

Jones says he’s not sure if the public hearing process will be over by the Marijuana Control Board’s next meting on June 9, where the first marijuana retail licenses will be issued.
