When a vacancy in the Alaska State Legislature occurs, the governor is responsible for selecting a replacement, according to Alaska State Statue Sec. 15.40.320.

The governor must select the replacement within 30 days after the vacancy happens. However, if the remainder of the term of the predecessor in office will expire before the legislature will next meet, convene, or reconvene, the governor may not fill the vacancy.
