The Kenai Kardinals led the peninsula schools in the team scores and Kardinal athletes earned a pair of relay championships at the 2022 ASAA Division II State Track & Field Championships, held at Dimond High School.
Eight state championships were earned by Kenai Peninsula athletes; two in relays and six individual.
Division II Team Standings
Homer boys finish second and Homer girls fifth in the Division II team scoring.
The Kenai boys and girls both finished third in the Division II team scoring.
The Seward girls place fourth in the Division II team scoring.
ASAA Division II State Results: Kenai Central High School Boys
Jacob Begich stepped to the podium four times on Saturday as one of the state’s top sprinters. Jacob finished 2nd in the 100M and 2nd in the 200M and was a member of the Kenai boys championship 4X100M relay and 4X200M relay teams. Relay team members included: Jacob Begich, James Sparks, Reagan Graves and Tyler Hippchen.
Gregory Fallon won the Kardinals only individual running title with a championship in the 800M run in a time of 2:01.42.
Other top finishes for Kenai athletes: John Wright, 4th in discus; Tyler Hippchen, 4th in long jump; James Sparks, 7th in 110M hurdles; Matthew Krol, 5th in 300M hurdles; Boys 4X400M relay, 6th place; Boys 4X800M relay, 4th place

ASAA Division II State Results: Kenai Central High School Girls
The Kardinal girls strength proved in the field events with seven place-winners.
Malena Grieme placed third in the long jump with a jump of 15′ 3.25″ and finished third in the 100M at 13.58. Emilee Wilson place fourth in the long jump at 15′ 0.25″ and place 6th in the triple jump. Malerie Nunn placed fifth in the triple jump at 30′ 7.25″.
Emma Beck lead the Kardinals with a pair of top six finishes in the throws. Emma finished third in the shot put at 31′ 9.5″ and finished fifth in the discus with a distance of 93′ 8″.
Other Top Peninsula Finishes
Nikiski’s Rylee Ellis won the Division II girls long jump with a jump of 15′ 9″ and finished second in the 800M at 2:33.94.
Nikolaevsk’s Justin Trail won the Division II boys high jump with a height of 6″. Justin also finished fifth in the long jump and fifth in the triple jump.
Homer’s Caleb Evans won the Division II boys long jump with a jump of 19′ 11″.
Homer’s Izzy Fisk won the Division II girls discus with a throw of 33′ 4.25″.
Homer’s Seamus McDonough placed second in the 800M, second in the 3200M and third in the 1600M. Homer’s Aiden Brost placed third in the 100M hurdles and second in the 300M hurdles.
Seward’s Tommy Cronin won the Division II boys triple jump at 41′ 7.75″. Tommy also placed second in the long jump and fifth in the high jump.
Seward’s Hayley Ingalls placed second in the 1600M run and second in the 3200M run.
