Write-in candidates for regional education attendance area elections may see changes to the rules when they run for office, if the Division of Elections’ latest proposal is successful. In a proposed change to the write-in candidate rules: “A candidate may not file as a write-in candidate unless another candidate has filed a declaration of candidacy.”
In this case, if no candidate officially files a declaration of candidacy, being a write-in candidate will not be an option. As of the publication of this article, this only impacts regional educational attendance area elections, but a question and comment period has been opened to discuss the topic.
The Division of Elections is taking public comments regarding this change. To do so via e-mail, contact [email protected]. Via telephone, call (907) 465-3203. Also, comments can be submitted through the Alaska Online Public Notice System and received no later than 5:00 p.m. on March 2.
Questions can be submitted to Brian Jackson at [email protected] and must be received at least ten days before the end of the public comment period.
