Dominant Glacier Pilots Pitching Hands Oilers Sixth Straight Loss

It was the Matthew Sanchez show at Mulcahy Stadium on Thursday. The Anchorage Glacier Pilots behind their right-hander, who tossed 6.2 innings of one-hit baseball, handed the Peninsula Oilers a 3-1 loss.

The loss was the sixth straight for the Oilers (12-25), who saw the Chugiak-Eagle Chinooks tie the Oilers for fourth place in the Alaska Baseball League standings with the Chinooks recording a 9-4 win against the Mat-Su Miners on Thursday.

The Pilots (17-15) with the win finish the regular season against the Oilers with a 9-2 record.

The Pilots drilled the game’s first run in the second inning on a Zach Morgan home run against Oilers starter Jake Fenn.

In the third, Daniel Mendez launched a lead-off homer against Fenn to give the Pilots a 2-0 lead. The Oilers pitching staff has served up a league-leading 16 home runs.

The Pilots scored their third run in the fourth on an Alex Baeza RBI single. That was all the Pilots needed with Sanchez on the mound. The Pilots starter no-hit the Oilers through 6.2 innings before Jaden Fein laced a two-out single over the head of Pilots shortstop Zach Ottino. Sanchez struck out an ABL high 12 batters in the win.

The Oilers lone run came in the top of the ninth when Calvin Farris drove in Bobby Goodloe against Pilots reliever Cody Curfman.

Oilers close out season series against Mat-Su Miners

The Oilers travel to Hermon Brothers Field on Friday to take on the Mat-Su Miners in their final meeting of the season.

Remaining road trip schedule:

Friday:Miners: 7 p.m; Hermon Brothers Field

Saturday:Chinooks: 7 p.m; Lee Jordan Field

ABL Playoff Update:

With the loss on Thursday, the Oilers and Chinooks are tied for the final playoff spot for the upcoming ABL Top of the World Series Playoffs. The standings are based off of win percentage and not outright wins.

The Oilers own the tie-breaker against the Chinooks having won the best of 11-game season series against Chugiak 6-4.
