DOT crews are currently working to repair the 20 x 10 foot sinkhole that opened up on the Kenai Spur Highway last night.
The two lanes leading into Kenai from N Forest Dr to S Spruce St have been closed, while the center turn lane has been converted into an inbound lane, allowing traffic to continue moving freely.
The Alaska Department of Transportation, Soldotna Station Foreman Brian Gabriel assessed the initial damage and is organizing repairs. Gabriel says it isn’t yet clear how the sinkhole formed or how long the repairs will take, but he’s hopeful the road will be back up to grade soon. That stretch of the Spur was already scheduled for significant reconstruction this summer.
