DOT Continues Battle Against Erosion Near Sterling Highway

Over the last few years, an underground spring has been eroding the bluff near Mile 153 of the Sterling Highway towards Homer.

Shannon McCarthy with the Department of Transportation said the stabilization efforts should prevent having to reroute the road.

McCarthy: “We took a look at this and we feel that we can get in there, remove the problem materials and put down a rip-rap which will allow moisture to move through without moving the materials out from underneath the road and then re-slope it to get the water away from it. We’ll also put down some geotechnical materials that will also protect it.”

Crews are working in the area but Shannon said most of the work will not impede traffic.

That project is slated to be done this season.

The DOT has been fighting erosion towards the highway in that area since 2012.
