The Alaska Department of Transportation is looking for feedback on transforming the Sterling Highway into a four lane divided highway from Soldotna to Sterling in 2021. They will host an open house on January 28 about the safety corridor at the Soldotna Borough Assembly Chambers.
Shannon McCarthy with the DOT says the project is working to secure Federal highway funding to make the heavily traveled roadway more safe.
Mccarthy: “So this recommends a four-lane divided highway with a depressed median. It’s very similar to like Minnesota Drive here in Anchorage. There’s some room in between the lanes, it’s separated, usually it’s grass so that way it helps with drainage, snow storage and those kinds of things. And that will help address safety, capacity issues, and mobility.”
She says the details of that proposed alternative are laid out in the Preliminary Engineering Report which will be available for review at the open house.
Mccarthy: “They’ve done a lot of engineering work and they want to move forward into a full-blown environmental document where they get to do even more detailed work before they can move forward with construction.”
That meeting will be from 4:00-7:00 pm Thursday, January 28 in the Borough Assembly Chambers in Soldotna.
