The Alaska Department of Transportation and Public Facilities (DOT&PF) is hosting a public open house for the Sterling Safety Corridor Improvements Milepost (MP) 82.5 to 94 project.

The open house will be held at the Soldotna Regional Sports Complex (SRSC) from 4:00 – 7:00 p.m. on Thursday, Oct. 24.

The project is currently in the design engineering phase. The public is invited to an open house meeting to learn what data and studies are in progress, view and provide input on highway and intersection design concepts being considered, and discuss the project team’s ideas for improving safety while balancing the need to maintain access for local residents and businesses.

Due to available funding, substantial construction activities will likely not commence until the spring of 2026. This open house is another chance to ask questions and provide feedback to the project team before a design recommendation is made and presented to the public next spring.

This fall, the project team is out in the field to investigate subsurface conditions along the safety corridor with test boring and test pits within and adjacent to the Sterling Highway and at Soldotna Creek. Drivers can expect to see the Geotech team in the area, along with traffic control measures.

The project team will work to minimize disruptions to normal traffic. Additional fieldwork will continue next summer.

The project follows the department’s identification of a need for improvements to the Sterling Safety Corridor MP 82.5 to 94 to improve safety and reduce congestion for people and motorized traffic traveling along the Sterling Highway.

The meeting will be in an open house format and will include a brief presentation about the work in progress, which will be repeated several times during the open house.

This story has been updated to include the time and location of the meeting.
