Drone Ban in Effect for President Obama’s Visit

No drones will be allowed near President Barack Obama during his visit to Alaska.

 

The Federal Aviation Administration has set an unmanned aircraft systems ban within areas classified as National Defense Airspace from August 31 until September 2.

 

The FAA’s Flight Advisory defines the National Defense Airspace as the airspace within about a 35 mile radius, from the ground up to 11.5 miles high, of the VIP.

 

Palmer’s Representative Shelley Hughes reminded Alaskans that drones are not permitted to be flown within five miles of airports, over crowds, or near heavily traveled roadways.

 

She said, “So if you’re thinking of catching a birds eye view of the VIP and dignitaries in downtown Anchorage or elsewhere using your hobby drone, don’t,” emphasizing also that “elsewhere” includes Seward, Dillingham and Kotzebue next week.

 

A task force on drones is currently working on a privacy guideline booklet to help educate the public on proper use and will be available next month.
