Willy Dunne is campaigning for the Kenai Peninsula Borough Assembly’s South Peninsula(District 9) seat.
He decided to run after multiple people recommended he would be a good candidate and it seems like a good time to get involved since his daughter is grown.
Dunne: “Over the near three decades I’ve lived in the district I’ve worked as a commercial fisherman, a carpenter, a park ranger, and for the past almost 20 years now studying fisheries. I have a broad experience and I believe I have the ability to work with diverse interests.”
He said “taxes are always an issue” but finding a balance between taxes and services is important.
Dunne: “Roads are always an issue. Our Kachemak Emergency Services and Anchor Point Emergency Services are also growing, they’re finding more and more need for fire and emergency services in our district. So I would like to see our emergency service areas fully funded. I’m sure we’ll need to find a balance between sales tax and property tax, perhaps look at properties that are exempted from property tax and see if there might be appropriate modifications to the property tax system.”
The south peninsula district has different needs and interests than other borough districts according to Dunne, because it does not receive as much oil and gas revenue, instead balancing fishing and tourism to make up the difference.
South Peninsula voters will decide on October 6 if Dunne or his opponent Dawson Slaughter will represent District 9.
KSRM will continue to provide snapshots of each local candidate running in that municipal election.
