Some public hiking trails within the burned area from the Swan Lake fire remain closed to public access.

In a statement released by the Kenai National Wildlife Refuge, they recommend avoiding using trails marked closed by posted signage. Emergency trail stabilization crews will be working on these trails as spring arrives to make them safer for visitors.

The following facilities are currently closed due to the Swan Lake fire:

Kenai River Trail
Hideout Trail
Seven Lakes Trail (east of Kelly Lake and east of Engineer Lake)
Skyline Trail
Surprise Creek Trail

The goal of the closure is to minimize risk to people while providing access where possible. The closure will remain in effect through May 2 unless rescinded earlier, or extended for cause.

The following Skilak Wildlife Recreation Area trails are open to public use:

Skilak Lookout Trail
Hidden Creek Trail
Vista Trail (inside Upper Skilak Campground)
Bear Mountain Trail.
All trails off Swanson River and Swan Lake Roads.

Visitors should travel these areas with caution as many trees are still unstable and prone to falling. Areas of downed timber may make many areas impassable. Visitors should also note that Skilak Lake Road will not receive winter maintenance by the Alaska Department of Transportation, therefore, conditions may not be conducive to driving within the Skilak Wildlife Recreation Area.
