EPA Asks to Subpoena ACS Emails

The group behind the proposed Pebble Mine is asking for permission to subpoena Alaska Communications. Attorneys yesterday said they want a guarantee that emails relating to the case will be preserved.

 

The emails outline communications between a former U.S. Environmental Protection Agency employee and an attorney who has represented Pebble opponents. The Pebble Limited Partnership is concerned those emails might be dumped during routine server maintenance and file-clearing.

 

The emails would be part of an ongoing case; Pebble is suing the EPA over an environmental study which they say was initiated in order to support a veto of the Pebble Project.

 

The federal agency insists the Partnership was meaningfully involved in the study which concluded that large-scale mining would damage salmon habitat in the Bristol Bay Region. The EPA is asking for the suit to be dismissed.
