Governor Bill Walker added the so-called “Erin’s Law” to his special session call, but Merryn said she won’t recognize the version currently being forwarded by Alaska’s Senate.

 

Senator Mike Dunleavy stood behind a change which would make sexual assault prevention programs voluntary for Alaskan schools, not mandatory. These types of program is already in place in the Kenai Peninsula Borough School District.

 

Lawmakers have worried about adding another unfunded mandate to districts in financial distress, along with the complications of teaching sensitive material to young children when educators may not have the necessary psychological training.

 

The Senate Education Committee rewrote the HB 44, formerly passed by the House 34-6, but also used the opportunity to address other schools issues. A legislative attorney responded to a memo request from Sen. Dunleavy and said the extra actions may be outside the constiution, since they were outside the Governor’s mandate for this special session.
