Alaska State Troopers have announced a fatal bear mauling in the Hope area of the Chugach National Forest. They were advised of the situation on Wednesday night at approximately 10:07 p.m.
It was reported that a Hope resident had been clearing a trail approximately one mile behind his property, located off of Mile 8 of the Hope Highway. His wife became concerned when he was overdue. Their dog, which had been with him, returned home alone.
The man’s body was located by family and friends in the area he had been working, deceased with wounds consistent with a bear attack. All subjects immediately departed the area. The trail is described as not ATV accessible.
A joint response to the site of the mauling by Alaska Wildlife Troopers and United States Forest Service rangers is in progress. More details will be reported as they become available.
