Fatal Plane Crash Reported in Kasilof

Multiple agencies responded around 8 pm to a fatal plane crash and large fire in Kasilof in the area of S Coho Loop and Powder Keg Ave, about 150 feet from the road.

 

Clint Johnson with the NTSB said an investigator is en route. At least one person was killed in a single-engine plane, which may have been a Cessna 180 (still to be confirmed). There are 253 Cessna 180’s registered in Alaska.

 

It wasn’t immediately clear if there were other passengers. Johnson said the accident was not survivable. Witnesses were unable to find anyone who had been ejected from the aircraft and were driven away from the crash site by flames and small explosions.

 

Emergency responders were blocking the road at Mile 3 of Coho Loop shortly after 8pm, extinguishing the fire by 8:50pm.The crash site was taped off and the road reopened by 10:30pm.

 

CES Captain Terry Bookey said the plane went down in a treed lot, but was unable to comment on the accident, deferring to State Troopers.
