The Federal Aviation Administration has announced that they are awarding several federal grants to airports in Alaska. The announcement on Tuesday comes as part of a $1.2 billion pledge of grants to 405 airports in 50 states and six U.S. territories.
Kenai Municipal Airport will be receiving a little over $1 million to buy land for approaches, as well as to build, repair, or expand a sand and chemical storage building.
U.S. Secretary of Transportation Elaine Chao: “This $1.2 billion federal investment will improve our nation’s airport infrastructure, enhance safety, and strengthen growth in local communities, which is especially important as the economy recovers from COVID-19.”
This series of grants follows a July round of grants that awarded $273 million to airports throughout the nation. That included close to $6.5 million to Homer Airport, set for construction and rehabilitation projects, including expansion of a snow removal equipment building.
The Department is awarding federal grants to the following airports in Alaska:
- $13,810,007 for Fairbanks International Airport to install perimeter fencing, reconstruct the runway and taxiway lighting, rehabilitate the taxiway and shift or reconfigure the existing runway and taxiway.
- $8,170,209 for various locations in Alaska to install NAVAIDS, acquire snow removal equipment, obstruction mitigation, obstruction markings and lighting, and to seal runway pavement.
- $3,330,422 to Ralph Wien Memorial Airport in Kotzebue to install and reconstruct lighting, and rehabilitate an apron, taxiway, and taxilane.
- $3,244,278 to Gustavus Airport to construct a taxiway and rehabilitate the apron, runway, and taxiway.
- $1,694,674 to Kasigluk Airport to conduct or update a miscellaneous study; construct, repair, modify or expand a snow removal equipment building; install navigational aids; remove obstruction, markings or lighting; rebuild runway and taxiway lighting; repair an access road; and repair an apron and taxiway.
- $1,066,666 to Quinhagak Airport to seal the runway surface pavement and joints.
- $1,048,875 to Kenai Municipal Airport to buy land for approaches and build, repair, or expand a sand and chemical storage building.
- $226,305 to Klawock Airport to for an airport wildlife hazard assessment or management plan.
