Cell Phone and Internet users on the Kenai Peninsula are experiencing outages from Soldotna to Homer. Alaska State Troopers advise that this may affect the ability to call 911.
Hannah Blankenship with Alaska Communications says that some customers are experiencing voice and internet outages.
Blankenship explains the cause is due to a cut fiber buried near Skyview Middle School in Soldotna.
She says the crews are working to restore service…
“It’s our top priority and we estimated that repairs will be complete by 7pm”
Alaska Communications customers are not the only ones experiencing these outages. Customers using Verzion, AT&T and GCI are experiencing outages across the the Kenai.
David Morris with GCI…
“It appears that fiber optic cable was cut by Skyview High School this morning at about 11:10am. That fiber, we believe belongs to ACS. And depending on what type of traffic is on that fiber, it’s kind of hard for me to speak to that, but it could potentially be cell phone, internet, it could be your regular telephone.”
Morris explains how the fiber being cut effects multiple providers…
“It really does have the potential to effect all customers regardless of carrier, simply because if the carrier who has the outage, if you are trying to call someone else, it has to transit their network then you will have an incomplete call or some type of unsatisfactory experience.”
Currently technicians are working to repair the cable and expect service to be restored by 7pm.
