The Division of Forestry helicopter responded to a fire that was reported near Sterling this afternoon.
Fire Management Officer Howie Kent said the fire was much smaller than reported and quickly doused.
He added it demonstrates the Kenai Peninsula’s flammability, which will increase as temperatures rise.
Kent: “Our fire danger level is currently at the upper end of moderate but we’re going into high fire danger for the weekend here, we’ll be in high for sure by tomorrow afternoon at the same time.”
Kent said anyone outside this weekend should be sure to extinguish fires.
Suspicious fires or smoke can be reported to the Division of Forestry at 260-4200 or the Alaska State Troopers at 262-4453.
