Central Emergency Services responded to a structure fire near Mile 14 of Funny River Road just before 5:00 am Thursday morning.
CES Captain Terry Bookey said it was reported by a passerby.
Capt. Bookey: “The caller was driving by and reported that he saw a structure that was on fire and nearly to the ground.”
Ten minutes later the first units arrived and reported that the approximately 10 x 24 foot cabin was already burned to the ground but still had active flames.
There appeared to be no one home and Bookey said there was no indications in the debris that anyone was caught in the fire. Fire investigators were contacting the property owners.
The fire was under control by 5:24 am and declared out about an hour later according to Captain Bookey.
Capt. Bookey: “The reason it took so much time to be declared out from the time it was under control is there was a significant amount of overhaul that the crews needed to do to be able to get to the seed of the fire.”
He estimated the total loss of the structure to be between $20-30,000 not including belongings inside.
The investigation is ongoing.
