Fire Started Near Anchor Point Still Burning

A dozen fire fighters are still working on a fire started by a debris burn near Anchor Point yesterday afternoon.

Howie Kent with the Division of Forestry said his agency was called in at 4pm and responded immediately with engines and helicopter.

A total of 36 fire fighters have attended the fire…

Kent: “The fire was moving pretty quickly because of the wind. It spread fairly rapidly. Our conditions have been ramping up as we’ve gone along here. Of course, we’ve had some precip[itation] here the last couple weeks, so that’s kind of kept everything down and in check, but now we’re starting to see a little bit nicer weather and that makes that grass dry out really fast, really just within a couple of hours of sunshine and some wind that grass layer will be burnable. It doesn’t take long.”

Kent said the person burning debris stepped inside for just 15 minutes. That’s how long it took for the wind to pick up and spread the blaze.

The blaze has been brought under control. Kent said they’re still working to extinguish hot spots, but expect the fire to be out this afternoon.
