A firefighter working on the Juneau Lake Fire in Cooper Landing sustained minor injuries from a bear on Monday.
Public Information Officer Jean Goad…
Goad: “We got a report about 8:30 last night, that’s Monday evening June 22, that a firefighter working on the Juneau Lake Fire in Chugach National Forest, encountered a bear and had some injuries. We sent the Life Med helicopter, which was the quickest way to get him from a very remote location on the mountain to medical attention.”
The Oregon Interagency Incident Management Team 4 delivered aid to the firefighter through their “incident within an incident” training.
Goad: “He was able to walk from the site where he encountered the bear to the helicopter and he is undergoing treatments for animal bites.”
Although firefighting is inherently dangerous, all agencies are continually working to mitigate dangers for firefighting and are trained in emergency response for incidents like this.
