Beginning on Monday, October 17, public firewood will be made available for pickup at the end of Langille Road in Cooper Landing between the times of 6:00 a.m. and 10:00 p.m.
Shannon McCarthy, Media Liaison and Admin Operations Manager for the Alaska Department of Transportation and Public Facilities told KSRM:
“There is firewood available. This is very popular with the public. Obviously, it’s going to be mostly for local people because it doesn’t make sense for people to come from further away. Some of the wood will be green still so you will have to let it dry, but certainly it’s a great thing for everyone. It allows some of this wood that we’re clearing to have that secondary use. You can contact the DOT Project office at (907) 595 – 2217. It is first come first served. We do recommend, of course, people bring your chainsaw, safety equipment such as goggles, gloves, good shoes, hard hat, a facemask for dust and then a four-wheel drive vehicle of some sort.”
According to the AKDOT, the logs are approximately 20 feet long. To access the pickup-location, a four-wheel drive vehicle is recommended. The location will be open for three weeks, and then mechanical means for loading firewood will be allowed.
