The Kenai National Wildlife Refuge is extending personal use firewood collection by permit until April 15.
According to a press release from the Refuge, Spring breakup appears to be delayed this year and road conditions are able to support this extension. Firewood collection is permitted along Swan Lake, Swanson River and Funny River Roads, within Dolly Varden Campground, and unburned areas within Upper Skilak and Lower Skilak Campgrounds.
Permits with maps and all special conditions may only be obtained by contacting the Refuge at (907) 262-7021. No permits will be issued in-person. All existing permits are automatically extended and will now expire April 15.
Cutting is limited to trees which are dead and down within the designated permit areas. Standing trees may not be felled. Vehicles are prohibited beyond the shoulders of the main roads. ATVs are prohibited. Excess limbs and woody debris must be piled outside of campsites within campgrounds. Permits allow collection of up to five cords of firewood for personal, non-commercial use per household. All other wood cutting on the Refuge is prohibited, except dead and down wood may be used for campfires while camping on the Refuge.
The Kenai National Wildlife Refuge urges everyone to do their part when visiting by following CDC guidance and State of Alaska health mandates to prevent the spread of infectious diseases. This advice includes:
- maintaining a safe distance when around other groups;
- washing hands often with soap and water for at least 20 seconds;
- avoid touching eyes, nose, and mouths;
- covering your mouth and nose when coughing or sneezing;
- staying home when feeling sick.
