The coming New Year is cause for celebration around the world, not just locally.
Fireworks will, again, be allowed within Kenai city limits this New Year’s Eve. On the days of December 31st and January 1st only, a 48-hour period, a person over the age of eighteen may use salable fireworks within the City of Kenai, according to the Kenai Fire Department.
Kenai Firefighter Mitch Miller spoke to KSRM confirming the details, “Fireworks are allowed for a 48-hour period over December 31st and January 1st. New Year’s Eve and New Year’s Day. People can fire fireworks that they bought from a fireworks stand. Anyone over 18-years of age can use those fireworks and it needs to be on their own private property in the City of Kenai or with the permission of the property owner.”
Miller says to exercise caution when launching them, “Our fire marshal asks us to remind people that they can be held legally and civilly responsible for any damage or injuries related to the use of fireworks. Be careful. Use common sense and discretion.”
Can you use fireworks on the beach? Miller says, “In a public field, say they went out to the baseball field, something like that, the answer is no. You can’t legally use fireworks on the beach, at least in the city of Kenai. Again, in our jurisdiction of the city of Kenai. Can’t use them on the beach. Can’t use them on public places. Has to be on private property that you have permission to use those fireworks on.”
REMINDER: Fireworks are forbidden in the Kenai Peninsula Borough, except for planned, professional, permitted displays.
