First Basketball WPI Released With State Rankings

Author: Coach Dan Gensel |

The first WPI is out!  Where do we rank? What does it matter?

The Winning Percentage Index, WPI, is a rating tool used by the Alaska School Activities Association to rank high school basketball teams in the 3A and 4A division of Alaska basketball.

The WPI rankings serve two purposes:

  1.  To determined at-large berths to the basketball state tournaments in the 3A and 4A division.
  2.   To rank the state qualifiers, 1 through 8 for the tournament brackets.

The WPI released on January 24th is more for entertainment purposes than any practical application, since teams are unable to change there remaining schedules to schedule more difficult (or easier) competition.

The WPI is a formula which includes: win-loss record within classification; and corrected opponents win/loss record

(Note from ASAA: 1. The corrected win-loss record of all your opponents (50% of WPI) is used as to not get credit for a win in the first category and a loss in the second category. )
