On May 5th and 6th the Kenai River Spring Cleanup will see scores of local, students, residents, and guides out cleaning up the shores of the river for the fourth year in a row.

Event coordinator Cindy Glassmaker says the students are often baffled by the amount of garbage they collect in just two days.

Glassmaker: “Not just fishing line, we’ve found things like cell phones, rebar, with the river being low it’s amazing what you find. In 2014, from the first event itself, we collected 2,000 pounds of debris from the various locations such as Centennial, Swiftwater Park, up to Bing’s Landing. It’s amazing how it’s all accumulated.”

Students are armed with gloves and garbage bags, and then supervised by volunteers who help keep children safe.

Glassmaker says the event helps the young people foster stewardship and personal respect for the Kenai River.
