Ever wonder why local cities flush their water mains twice a year? Part of the reason is a buildup of manganese…
Wood: “It’s a staining component and when you’re washing white clothes it can stain your clothes and it turns your fixtures, your toilet bowls and orange-brownish color.”
Soldotna Utilities Director Rick Wood said minerals build up int he City’s water supply and hydrant flushing in the spring and fall helps keep them clear…
Wood: “We’re trying to flush all the sediment out of the mains and we’re going to be stirring up a lot of the minerals like the iron and manganese in the water. You might notice brown water and if you notice that brown water, we suggest that you run your cold water until it clears up.”
Hydrant flushing in Soldotna will start April 20 and continue through April 23 from 7am to 5pm. The City of Kenai will also be flushing hydrants this month.
