Nikiski, Kenai and SoHi Win Saturday Showdowns In Small & Medium Divisions Football Playoffs

The 2015 high school football season moved into divisional first-round playoffs with Small Schools and Medium Schools contests on Saturday; the Large School division featuring a pair of games on Friday and a pair of games on Saturday.

 

 

Nikiski 41 – Barrow 18 

The Nikiski Bulldogs, undefeated in the Peninsula Conference, downed the Barrow Whalers on Saturday 41-18; Nikiski advancing to the Small School state championship game.

Nikiski will face Eielson for the 2015 Small School football championship, a rematch of the 2014 championship game won by Eielson 55-51.

The Small School championship game is set for Saturday, October 17th at noon @ Dimond High School.

 

Kenai 74 – North Pole 6 

The Kenai Kardinals overpowered the North Pole Patriots 74-6 Saturday at Dimond High School, The Kardinals ground game was unstoppable as Kenai scored 10 rushing touchdowns, lead by Andrew Welborn with four touchdowns and over 200 rushing yards.Chase Gillies and Draiden McMinn both added a pair of touchdowns and Zach Tuttle and Ramos added 4th quarter touchdowns.

The Kardinals advance to the Medium School football championship game scheduled for Saturday at 4:00 p.m. @ Dimond High School.  The Kards will face the Soldotna Stars. The two teams have won every Medium School title; Kenai in 2011, SoHi in 2012, 2013 and 2014.

 

SoHi 49 – Thunder Mountain 13 

The Soldotna Stars, three-time Medium Schools football champions, dominated the Thunder Mountain Falcons 49-13 in the Medium School second playoff game on Saturday.  SoHi lead 28-7 at the half with the opening touchdown coming on a 2-yard pass from Dylan Simon to Trevor Walden.  SoHi’s rushing attack was lead by Mason Prior with four rushing touchdowns and over 160 rushing yards; Jace Urban scored two rushing TD’s for SoHi.

The Stars return to the Medium School championship game for the fifth-straight year and will go for a fourth-straight state championship.  SoHi holds the state’s longest win streak with 38 consecutive victories; SoHi last loss was in August 2012.

The Medium School championship game is set for Saturday, October 17th at 4:00 p.m. @ Dimond High School.
