Football Regular Season Contests Include Playoff Shot For Bulldogs

The final weekend of regular season high school football is here and conference rivalries fill the scheduled on Saturday, September 30th with the Soldotna Stars traveling to Kenai and the Nikiski Bulldogs hosting Seward.

Week Eight: Northern Lights Conference Playoff Implications  

The Soldotna Stars put their undefeated record on the line at KCHS on Saturday in the NLC regular season finale’.  SoHi stands at 3-0 in the NLC; 7-0 on the 2017 season; and the Stars football program has extended its Alaska best consecutive win streak to 56 straight games.

SoHi has clinched a Division II state playoff berth and have recorded a 12th -straight Northern Lights conference championship.  SoHi’s last state playoff game loss was to the Kardinals in the Medium School Championship game in 2011; SoHi last conference, regular season game loss was also to the Kardinals back in 2005 (pre-dating both Coach Brantley and Coach Riddall).  Kenai, 1-2 in NLC, was eliminated from the playoffs with a week seven loss to Palmer.  SoHi and Palmer will represent the NLC in the Division II playoffs, with the first round scheduled for Saturday, October 7th at Palmer High School.

The Soldotna Stars travel to Kenai for the Kardinals Senior Day and SoHi brings the top offense and top defense in Division II to Ed Hollier Field at KCHS.

Soldotna’s offense has amassed over 2,800 total yards for a season which included three Division I schools and a 5A school from Oregon.  The Stars have rushed for over 2,100 yards lead by Brenner Furlong, who has surpassed the 1,000 yard threshold, and Aaron Faletoi, who has totaled over 560 rushing yards.  Star quarterback Brandon Crowder accounts for nearly 700 passing yards and 11 touchdowns.

SoHi’s starting defense has allowed only one touchdown to conference opponents in three conference games.

The Kenai Kardinals ground game has accumulated nearly 900 yards lead by Rykker Riddall with 400 yards and Titus Riddall with 245 yards.

Week Eight: Peninsula Conference Playoff Implications

The Nikiski Bulldogs host the Seward Seahawks in the regular season showdown with a final playoff position still available in the Peninsula Conference.

The Nikiski Bulldogs, 2-1 in conference, with a victory on Saturday will clinch the #2 seed into the Division III playoffs and will earn a road playoff game next week.  A loss by the Bulldogs and the #2 seed will be determined via a coin flip, tiebreaker between Nikiski, Seward and Joe Redington.  The Homer Mariners, 3-0 in conference play, have clinched the #1 seed and finish the regular season on Friday against Voznesenka.

Maybe some revenge on the Bulldogs mind on Saturday; the Seward Seahawks defeated Nikiski in the week eight game in 2016.

Nikiski’s offense has totaled 1,500 yards, mainly on the ground.  Ian Johnson and Cody Handley anchor the rushing attack.
