Kenai Central High School announced on Thursday night that the Kenai Kardinals football teams will not compete against the Soldotna Stars on Saturday and have pulled-out of the football games scheduled for SoHi Homecoming.
The Soldotna Stars not only lose a regular season game against a Division II opponent; but also, lose their final home contest of the regular season.
SoHi will be the Kenai Peninsula’s lone representative to the Division II state football playoffs, scheduled to begin October 16-17. (the Stars now have a second, straight, off-weekend and close their regular season at Homer on October 3rd.)
According to Kenai head football coach Dustin Akana…
” A few factors went in to this decision. One, is that our numbers have been low this whole week due to players not practicing because of sickness (non-COVID). Two, since those players are out we don’t have backups for our starters. I want so badly to be able to play SoHi, but we as a coaching staff need to take the safety of all players into consideration. We don’t want the boys to not be prepared (physically and mentally) for a team like SoHi which in turn could possibly affect their safety.”
The Kardinals are scheduled to play the Nikiski Bulldogs at Kenai Central High School on Friday October 2nd at 4 p.m. to close the regular season.
